The spirit who began in a state of simplicity and unawareness gradually begins to climb the first steps on the evolutionary ladder.  As it advances, it will develop emotions, which indicate activity and self-consciousness.  Likewise, its free will will develop, in accordance with its level of progress, which makes it possible for the spirit to earn merit for its advancement.
